Mental Health and Money

Attachment to Food, Money, Mental Health, and Money

In the parable of the rich fool, we have a man who is blessed materially and with an abundance. Rather then ask, what he can do to bless others and God, he tears down his barns and builds bigger ones to store it away. Then his life is taken from him. What good came out of storing up materials for himself?

He doesn’t ask, “What can I do to bless others with the abundance? Or What would God have me to do with the excess?

What is the problem with this man’s thinking? He is self-absorbed, self-preserving, and self-focused.

How can he combat his own self focus in life? Jesus tells us, “Use money and resources for what matters to God.

What matters to God? Orphans and widows. James 1:27 Religion that is pure, and undefiled before God and the Father is to care for orphans, and widows in their affliction….”

Of course, God knows we must have food water clothing and shelter and He will meet those needs. Past these basic needs, the monies, food, and materials are blessings from the Lord. And He calls us to be rich with the abundance towards the orphans and widows.

Money can be used for helping or it can be used for self-preservation.

An unhealthy attachment to storehouses results in a detached approach to God and his concerns. This detached approach leads to loneliness, self-isolation, and sadness for fear of losing materials.

Generosity towards orphans and widows combats unhealthy attachments to things, food, and materials.
